View the many metro station artworks below your feet while you´re strolling along the streets of Brussels; already admire Knokke-Heist´s future community centre while standing in front of the construction pit; or attach a photo of that fun moment to that one place so that friends can re-experience it later at this very spot; all of this is possible as of today, thanks to the latest application Krumb. Available free for both iOS and Android (beta).
Krumb is a Belgian start-up that is launching the first social application with which you share pictures and experiences with friends at the place where you experienced them. And only at that place, because these images are more relevant there.
That this worldwide first offers a relevant response to a genuine need is confirmed by the enthusiasm of the many partners who have already distributed thousands of ‘krumbs’ (messages). From Antwerp, Brussels and Knokke to Paris, London, Berlin and Warsaw. In this way, the Brussels metro is revealing its artworks via krumbs, Knokke-Heist is leaving behind futuristic construction projects in the streetscape, and the Ostend museum Mu.Zee will shortly be sharing the origin of its building. In downtown Ghent you can re-experience Chambres d´Amis thanks to krumbs from the Museum of Contemporary Art, and this summer you can follow Ensor´s sources of inspiration in Ostend. Alain de Botton shares krumbs of wisdom, and in Aalst you can re-experience the last carnival parade along the original route.
But you can also enjoy Krumb internationally. In Paris and Milan, for example, you get a back-stage peek at the various Fashion Weeks, or you discover the rich history of a city like Amsterdam, krumb by krumb.
But above all, Krumb is for everyone who wants to share and save experiences in that one particular place: photos of your friends in the café where they threw a party last week. An image of a historical building that once stood here, but in the meantime has been demolished. A funny story at a statue. A personal message from your partner on the spot where you kissed for the first time …
In recent years we have been inundated with social applications. They deluge us with pictures and events that are only occasionally relevant. Because we don´t feel ourselves to be directly involved, they often constitute merely fleeting messages that fade from our timeline in a matter of hours. Krumb wants to reintroduce meaning to our local digital experience. By leaving ´digital krumbs´ at specific locations and by making them available only in places that give them relevance. That´s why ´ONLY HERE´ is the promise that sets this free app apart from others.
Krumb´s technology is cutting-edge. By downloading the app (free from the App Store or Google Play - beta), you can view the krumbs via your smartphone. The Krumb explorer also provides you with a personal feed with krumbs from people, groups, cities … that you are actively following, as well as links to your current location. Algorithms determine which ´krumbs´ you see, and the sequence in which you get to see them. Do you know the person who left the krumb? Will the krumb be gone soon? Is it somewhere close? … All these parameters determine the order in which the krumbs are presented on your smartphone.
Nor does Krumb stop when you enter a building. Together with Estimote - leader in iBeacon technology - Krumb developed an extension making it possible to drop ultra-precise krumbs in buildings, museums or shops. They can even be attached to objects.
The number of krumbs is expected to explode in the near future - in Belgium and across Europe. Especially now that a growing number of people are starting to drop their own krumbs when they come across something they like or when they link an image, text or story to a specific location. It makes the world around us all the more fascinating.
